Summer School

Summer is pretty much here and we want to enjoy it as much as possible. I came up with a summer schedule for us to follow that will allow plenty of learning and outside play time. I don't like to take 2 1/2 to 3 months off from school. I really prefer to school as much as possible because we miss so much here and there anyway that it works out best this way. I used to plan and plan and then plan some more, but we were never able to follow the plan I laid out, so I do a little planning and go with the flow. Here is what our summer schedule looks like:

Summer Schedule

7:30- Get up, get dressed and do bathroom chore

8:00-Morning chores

9:00-Breakfast and cleanup-Morning devotions/Break if we are done early

10:00-Table time-Math, Penmanship, Grammar, Spelling, etc

11:00-Subject of choice- when finished, free

11:40-Spanish

12:05-Country study

12:30-Lunch and cleanup

1:00-Indian study- Patchwork Primers

1:40-Finish anything unfinished

2:00-House cleanup

2:20-Free

4:00-Afternoon chores, read aloud time- series by *Sarah Maxwell and Classics, then free

5:30-Dinner and cleanup

Most of what they are going to do I am helping with, but for some of it they are on their own. The three oldest will be learning about countries on their own (I will be there for any help needed) and doing Spanish mostly on their own. They are also required to find a subject or subjects that they are interested in and learn about it. Right now on their plates are drawing, crocheting, photography, basketball, camp cooking, birds, etc. I am sure there are more things, but I don't remember what else. I have tried to make the schedule loose and free as much as possible. I want them to be able to experience the summer weather as much as possible. We are finally able to have the windows open here. We are used to doing school in the summer in a house completely shut off from the hot, hot temperatures of the Texas summer. Here we don't have near as much heat in the summer (of course our winters are spent in a completely shut up house to keep out the extreme cold) so spending as much time outside is a goal we have.
I hope you are thinking about summer and what you can do to make it fun! We are coming up with ways in our house to enjoy it while it lasts (we only have one car so we have to come up with activities to do around the house).
*Sarah Maxwell is a sweet young lady. She is a homeschool graduate that has written four books in a series. They are wonderful and my entire family loves them. They are always begging me to read more. Here is the website if you are interested www.titus2.com

How funny! The girls and were discussing our summer schedule just last night. We even have a "scheduled" time to work on something of particular interest. My youngest has chosen drawing and my middle has chosen crochet.

Too much free time for kids is not a good thing typically (imho).

I agree about too much free time. I try to limit the amount of free time that they have but think that when the weather is nice, it is fun to get outside and ride bikes, play ball and work in the garden.
I am hoping to also keep a supply of CD Roms from the library for the kids so that their computer time will be spent learning some too. I might change the schedule some too, this is a rough draft. Sometimes it seems hard to find the balance between too much free time and not enough.

Oh absolutely! I just know so many moms that have *nothing* scheduled for the kids at all in the summer. I only schedule about 3 hours a day. The rest is theirs.
