My kitchen is ALIVE

My kitchen has living, growing things in it. No, it isn't mold that usually grows in our refrigerators (at least there wasn't any the last time I checked). I have had Kombucha in my kitchen for many, many months now. Kombucha tea is supposed to be a wonderful healing drink. Since I didn't really have any problems when I started drinking it, I can't say that it heals or not but I can say it detoxed me! I feel better when I drink it and hopefully will continue drinking it for a long time. If you have never seen one, you can actually go to youtube.com and see a couple videos about it. -Actually, there are videos on the sauerkraut and a couple on the sourdough too. The sourdough videos I don't recommend, unless you are watching how to shape the bread or make pizza. I don't add any sort of yeast to the starter, just flour and water.-
I have sauerkraut fermenting too. I have never done sauerkraut before, so I don't know how it will turn out. If it fails, I will just try again. I would like to learn to make a few fermented veggies but not go crazy with them. I know I haven't ate any and neither have my kids, so I will go slowly and see how it goes.
I also started my sourdough back up. I stopped doing sourdough for a while, just got out of the habit. I really want to keep making our breads and want them to be healthy, so sourdough it is. I can't wait to make biscuits and pancakes and English muffins and pizza, and .... The list goes on. I started the starter with rye flour and have started adding wheat flour to it. Here are a few links that might help you with sourdough, that is if you are interested.

These should get you started on making sourdough. There is so much information on here that you might get information overload. I suggest you read what you can, get a batch started and read some more. If you don't want to start with bread, there are still other things you can make.
I am hoping to make homemade ginger ale soon and a few other things. I have a friend who has kefir. I hope to get started on that in a month or two but I want to get these others done first and learn what I am doing with these before adding something else.
I hope you have a great Memorial Day weekend.

I've been making Kombucha for about 4 months now. Like you, I didn't have any specific known health concerns, but I do feel that it works great as a detox.

And my youngest just did a science fair project on which grain contains the most natural yeast. It was rye. And we've been making sourdough bread from that starter. I'm really interested now in finding a whole grain, nutty type bread recipe as this is what my husband prefers.

As far as the cabbage goes, I've not tried it yet. I'd love to try it though.

My next venture is yogurt! Maybe this weekend. :)

We seem to have a few things in common.
I have made yogurt before. Although it isn't the kind made from raw milk. Here in WI it is actually illegal to sell raw milk. They have found a way around the law, but they are so far away that it isn't economical for us.
I have made the recipe from www.hillbillyhousewife.com quite a few times. I add a little sweetener, honey or sugar and vanilla, and we really like it. A lot of times we add a little fruit or preserves (fruit sweetened if it is affordable). I stopped making it for a while, but do need to get back making yogurt, especially now that summer is on its' way. Let me know how your yogurt turns out.
